What is ease and who is it for?

ease stands for Essential Academic Skills in English and is a series of interactive CD-ROMs designed for students whose first language is not English but who need to study in an English-speaking country. The first disc in the series is the award-winning Listening to Lectures and the second is Seminar Skills 1: Presentations. The third, forthcoming CD, will be Seminar Skills 2: Discussions. This will be available by the end of 2005.

Listening to Lectures is the first volume in the ease series of academic English CD-ROMs. Listening to Lectures has been specifically designed for students:

  • whose first language is not English
  • who intend to study in an English-speaking country
  • who have to listen to lectures in English
  • who want to be more confident about their academic listening skills in English

Using the latest digital video technology, Listening to Lectures contains:

  • over 90 minutes of video and sound
  • clips from 40 real lectures
  • over 300 pages of exercises
  • note-taking practice with feedback and suggestions
  • vocabulary expansion exercises
  • a novel cross-referencing dictionary with video exemplification

There are six units which guide students through the key language skills involved in listening to lectures. These units are on Openings, Structure and Organisation, Language Functions, Attitude and Significance, and Argumentation.
